Europe in the eyes of youth and young voters

On 8 January at the Department of Education, Languages, Interculture, Literature and Psychology of the University of Florence, the debate on Europe seen by the new generations and young voters will take place as part of the ERASMUS Plus EU4YOUTH2ACT project. The participation of citizens in political and social life is the foundation of democracy. It keeps it alive and strengthens it over time. With awareness and the exercise of voting, we can select who represents us, influence the government's political decisions, as well as encourage an aware citizenry, informed about the problems and acting accordingly. Unfortunately, however, we observe that many of our peers of the so-called "Z-generation" limit ourselves to passive participation in social and political events, delegating to others the power to decide in their place, undermining the vitality of democracies and its aspirations for the future. What could be the reasons for this disenchantment? What expectations do the new generations have towards European institutions? How can they consciously follow and participate in decisions for their future? It is to answer these questions that the EU4YOUTH2ACT project organized the debate on 8 January 2024, promoted by the Fondazione Toscana Sostenibile (FTS) with the support of the Department of Education, Languages, Interculture, Literature and Psychology of the University of Florence. The initiative which will take place simultaneously in six other European partner countries of the project will have the aim of collecting information that will help develop tools aimed at bringing the new generations closer with awareness to the European institutions, like the mapping of the initiatives already begun.
