What we are going to talk about

Brexit has taken place, but when it comes to questions of strategic security and defence, the EU and the UK will need to continue cooperation. The UK remains in NATO, and it continues to share many strategic interests with the EU and its member states.

So what actually changed with Brexit? The EU has moved forward and established several defence cooperation projects, from PESCO (the permanent structured cooperation) to the European Defence Fund EDF. Partly, this was made possible by the UK’s exit, as the UK had been critical of more extensive European defense cooperation.

What will the future of UK-EU cooperation on defence look like? Is the UK interested in participating in EU projects such as PESCO and EDF, or will it rather seek to cooperate with individual EU member states? What are the economic interests behind close cooperation and is there any alternative?

Since Donald Trump’s presidency in the U.S., EU countries have realized that they need to prepare for the challenges of a changing world more independently. Will the UK, even with the Brexit, strive to position itself security-wise with the EU in this rapidly changing world? Let’s talk about this with Dr. Ulrike Franke from the European Council on Foreign Relations.

The event will take place on Discord. Info on how to join can be found here: https://meeteu.eu/how-to-access-meeteu/

What is MeetEU?

We are a network of volunteers who participated in the European Parliament's #thistimeimvoting and now together.eu campaign. The high voter turnout in the European elections motivated us to stay involved. Why not connect with all these amazing people across Europe? That's why in November 2019 we set up a MeetEU pilot group with people from different European countries to meet on the free online platform Discord. In March 2020 we opened the MeetEU Discord server for all together.eu supporters, in April 2020 for the general public. The initial monthly discussions have now become one event per week. Great, the European exchange of ideas is picking up speed!
