Meet with the Sakharov Prize laureate’s representative, Leonid Volkov

18 February 2022

10:30-11:30

The European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is awarded each year by the European Parliament. It was set up in 1988 to honour individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms and it is named in honour of Russian physicist and political dissident Andrei Sakharov.

The European Parliament awarded the 2021 Sakharov Prize to Alexei Navalny, a Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist. He came to international prominence for organising demonstrations against the current regime, running for office and advocating for anti-corruption reforms. In August 2020, Navalny was poisoned and spent months recovering in Berlin. He was arrested on his return to Moscow in January 2021. He is currently serving a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence, with more than two years still remaining.

The European Parliament honours human rights defenders, but is it enough?
Can we do more individually, at national and European level?

On 18 February, the 2021 Sakharov Prize laureate’s representative, Leonid Volkov (Advisor to Alexei Navalny) will meet online with you, civil society representatives from all over Europe. You will be able to ask questions and discuss with Leonid Volkov and Vice-President of the European Parliament Heidi Hautala.

The deadline for registrations is 16 February.
